405 STAFF PROCEDURE: RESTRAINING STUDENTS/ CPI
I. PURPOSE
In certain limited situations, a student may need to be restrained by a staff person. These guidelines will help to ensure the safety of all.
II. GENERAL STATEMENT
Students will only be restrained by Stonebridge staff who have attended CPI training. The Main Office will keep on file a list of staff that are CPI trained and will dispatch trained individuals when necessary.
A. Per CIP regulations, students will only be put in a restraint if they are:

- Physically harming another person.
- Physically harming themselves.B. According to CPI regulations, students must not be placed in a restraint for other behaviors including:

- Acting out
- Throwing materials
- Damaging property
- Yelling at/ disrespecting
- Defiance
- Refusing to go with staff
- Trashing a classroom or other space inside the school
- Leaving the building (though if a student is leaving the building, a 911 call should be placed immediately)

III. PROCEDURES
If a staff person feels a situation is getting out of control (including a fight between students) and a restraint may be necessary to prevent injury, the staff person should immediately contact the office and a CPI-trained individual will be sent.
A. Staff who are not CPI-certified but choose to restrain a student may be subject to disciplinary action.
B. Any time a student is restrained, a report must be completed by the certified individual in charge of the situation.
